Few VPNs split reviewers the way Proton VPN does. One lab calls it the most consistently fast service it has measured; another ranks it near the bottom for average download loss. Both can be telling the truth. Speed testing is a snapshot of one route, one hour and one protocol, and Proton’s own design choices make the spread wider than average.
Speed retained, side by side
Retained download speed derived from the published figures of each test. Different labs, different baselines, so compare the spread rather than any single bar.
Why the results disagree
Distance and baseline. A test on a 200 Mbps home line in Mumbai and a 1 Gbps server in Europe measure different things. The India test also showed how lopsided results can get: download dropped only 8%, while upload fell by almost half, and a US server returned 169 Mbps down and 71 Mbps up.

Proton VPN Speed in 2026
Secure Core. Proton’s multi-hop routing sends traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it exits. Gizmodo notes the extra encryption makes those servers a little slower, which is the price of the feature rather than a flaw. If a lab averages Secure Core and standard servers together, the headline number sinks.
Protocol and code. Proton’s spring and summer 2026 roadmap describes a new client-side WireGuard codebase, with long-awaited Stealth protocol support arriving alongside it. The stated goals are speed, stability and better behavior on censored networks. Until that rollout reaches your device, results from older builds may not reflect what you get today.
Treat Proton VPN as a fast service with a wide variance band. On nearby servers with WireGuard it keeps most of a fast connection; the weak results tend to come from long routes, Secure Core and congested peak hours.
The hard case: censored networks
GreatFire’s monitoring from mainland China in May 2026 logged Proton VPN speeds of roughly 215 to 294 KB/s with latency above 1,200 ms. That is usable for messaging, painful for video, and a reminder that raw Mbps matter less than whether a tunnel survives interference. Proton’s own censorship observatory keeps recording sign-up surges during shutdowns, including Oman in August 2026, which explains why Stealth matters to its roadmap.
Get the most speed out of it
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Protocol | WireGuard unless your network blocks it |
| Server choice | Closest standard server; switch if latency climbs |
| Secure Core | Only when your threat model needs it |
| Testing | Compare off-peak and evening runs, three tries each |
Price check
Roundups in 2026 list Proton VPN Plus at a reference price of $9.99 per month, with cheaper annual and multi-year rates. Tom’s Guide covered a two-year offer at $2.99 per month earlier this year, and coverage of Black Friday promotions is already appearing. Confirm the current price on Proton’s site before you buy.
Is Proton VPN fast enough for 4K streaming?
For most home connections on nearby servers, yes. The numbers above leave plenty of headroom for 4K, which needs far less than 100 Mbps.
Why is my upload slower than my download?
Several tests show a larger upload penalty than download penalty. Try another server or protocol before blaming your ISP.
