Proton in 2026: How the Mail, Pass, Drive and Lumo Roadmap Changes the VPN Bargain

VPN Reviews · Performance & Speed
A VPN is no longer the whole Proton story
Proton’s 2026 plans touch Mail, Calendar, Pass, Drive, Lumo and the VPN itself. What that means if speed is your only yardstick.

When people compare VPNs, they usually compare tunnels: speed, servers, price. Proton is quietly asking a different question. Its spring and summer 2026 roadmap focuses on improving existing products rather than launching new ones, and the VPN is one thread among several. That changes how you should weigh the subscription.

The roadmap at a glance

Proton VPN
A new client-side WireGuard codebase aimed at speed, stability and anti-censorship, with Stealth protocol support alongside it.
Proton Mail
Category views that sort mail automatically, plus the ability to send and receive from an existing Gmail address inside Proton.
Proton Pass
Smarter autofill, including URL matching and iFrame support, and folders for organizing credentials.
Drive and Sheets
Encrypted spreadsheets, shared drives for teams, and a cryptography update Proton says makes file encryption up to four times faster.
Lumo AI
A private assistant with a desktop app and an organizational API in development, and a 2.0 release adding reasoning and long-term memory.
Calendar
A full rewrite with offline mode and appointment booking pages.

Performance is a theme across the suite

Speed is not just a VPN metric here. Proton credits its Drive cryptography update with up to four times faster encryption and decryption, and says core file operations now run on its Drive SDK for better reliability. On the VPN side, the new WireGuard code targets the same goal: less overhead between you and the open internet. If you judge Proton by how fast its tools feel in daily use, the trend line is positive, even though independent VPN tests still vary widely (see our Proton VPN speed analysis).

THE GOLIRY TAKE

The ecosystem is Proton’s real differentiator. A VPN-only rival may win a single speed chart, but it cannot offer encrypted mail, passwords, storage and an AI assistant under one account and one privacy policy.

What it costs

Pricing roundups in 2026 list Proton VPN Plus around $9.99 per month on a monthly plan and $4.99 on annual billing, with Proton Unlimited at $9.99 per month billed yearly. Seasonal promotions come and go; one early-year deal cut the two-year VPN price to $2.99 per month, and Black Friday coverage has already begun. Because renewal prices often differ from the introductory offer, check the terms before you pay.

Who benefits most

If you are… Consider
Leaving Gmail and Google Drive Proton Unlimited, to use Mail, Drive and VPN together
Only chasing raw VPN speed Compare dedicated VPNs first, then weigh the bundle
Living with censorship Watch the Stealth rollout in the new WireGuard code
Are all roadmap items already live?

No. A roadmap states intentions, and timing can shift. Some items, such as Lumo 2.0 and Drive’s cryptography update, have since been announced; others remain in development.
